Born December 23, 1753,in Scotland Parish, Windham County, Connecticut, of Jeremiah ROSS and Ann (PAINE) ROSS. She was one of ten children.

Mary accompanied her father's family when they moved to Montville, New London County, Connecticut, about 1763; and again in 1774, when they moved to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. She shared the rigorous pioneer life in this wilderness area, apparently surviving to flee in July 1778 when the Wyoming Massacre forced them all to leave their homes. For a description of conditions and circumstances, refer to the accounts of her father and her brother, Perrin.
