"Sterling", as was generally called, never married, but lived on the farm he shared with his brother Samuel and Samuel's wife, Rachel. Sterling, like his brother Shafer, apparently also was a dedicated Christian and felt the call to evangelize, carrying a Bible with him wherever he went. He also was a skilled carpenter.
