Born in Pike Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, September 22, 1834, of Nelson ROSS and Eliza W. (BOSWORTH) ROSS. He was the second of five children. One sister was named Sara, and one brother may have been George H., but the others are not yet known.

Henry was raised on a farm and attended the LeRaysville, Pennsylvania, grade school and the Holland Patent Academy (not further identified, but probably located in the village of Holland Patent, Oneida County, New York, as described in 1860: “HOLLAND PATENT, [Named from Henry, Lord Holland, patentee of 20,000 acres, principally in this town. He sold to Seth and Horace Johnson and Andrew Cragie.] It contains 6 churches, the Holland Patent Academy, and 353 inhabitants.”)

At age 25, he started farming, and after six years he joined E.B. STONE in the mercantile and milling business. In 1870, he built his own store and was in business alone for six years. He then went into partnership with R. STEVENS for four years and with Lacy STEVENS for seven years. In 1887, the firm of Ross, Stevens, and Jones was organized.

On October 8, 1861, Henry married Sarah V. STEVENS, daughter of Myron STEVENS and Susan (BOSWORTH) STEVENS. (It is likely that Sarah's mother was related to Henry's mother, since both of their maiden names were BOSWORTH and were from the same vicinity). Sarah was born December 13, 1840, and died July 5, 1885. She is buried in the Stevensville, Pennsylvania, where her grave marker is reportedly still legible.

On June 6, 1888, Henry married Margaret J. HANEY, daughter of John HANEY and Nancy (IRWIN) HANEY. Margaret ("Maggie") was born in 1851, and died in 1915.

Henry was an active citizen, both as an elder and trustee in the Presbyterian Church, and as constable and tax collector in the town of LeRaysville. He was appointed postmaster in 1871 and served until 1885, then was reappointed in 1889.

He died in 1924.

Henry and Sarah had two children: George H., and Nellie. No record has been located of children born to Henry and Margaret.
